Darling Harbour. This is the family hub of Sydney with a several day's worth of activities here alone.
Take in the renowned Powerhouse Museum or the new Ettamogah Bar and Restaurant at the Harbourside Centre. Another attraction is Gavala, Sydney's only Aboriginal owned and operated Cultural Centre. Apart from the excellent shopping there are also casual food outlets offering delicious takeaway cuisine. On the western side of Darling Harbour is the Australian National Maritime Museum with a host of displays and wonderful school holiday activities. You'll see the 1983 America's Cup winner Australia II, Australia's largest museum ship the Ex-HMAS and 10 other vessels moored at the museum's wharves. At Darling Harbour's Sydney Aquarium you'll see large grey nurse sharks, Australian fur seals and harbour seals, saltwater crocodiles lurking in swamps, micro-aquariums with hands on control, a touch pool and 2 large floating oceanariums with 146 metres of underwater tunnel.

The Rocks. The historic site of Sydney's first European settlement, The Rocks contains many beautifully restored buildings from Sydney's early days. Explore the maze of original, cobblestone lanes with their shops, cafes and restaurants. The Rocks weekend markets contain unique gifts for those hard-to-please relatives back home.

Wonderland Theme Park (Western Sydney). This is NSW's premier theme park, featuring amazing rides like the spectacular Space Probe 7, the Bush Beast, the Demon Roller Coaster, Hanna Barbera Land and the Snowy River Rampage - a wild rapids water ride. There's also a beach area with pool and water slides.

Chinatown, 1km south east of the city centre. This is the place to immerse yourself in Chinese culture, eat, shop and explore the many intriguing supermarkets with weird and wonderful produce. Visit a food hall for an authentic Yum Cha meal or hunt for a designer discount at Market City. Get there by monorail from the city centre or Darling Harbour.

Ferry ride to Manly. A half hour ferry crossing of Sydney Harbour brings families to this cosmopolitan suburb nestled between a harbour beach on one side and a popular surf beach on the ocean. Don't forget to bring your swimsuit if the weather is good as this is one of Australia's most famous surfing beaches.The waterfronts are lined with cafes and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy the sea breeze or simply take a stroll along the beachfront promenade.

Middle Harbour Canoe Safari by Eco Escapes. Nature lovers should try this fascinating one-day tour on the tranquil waters of the uppermost reaches of Sydney Harbour. The paddle begins at Roseville Bridge and goes upstream through the unspoilt forest of Garigal National Park. After lunch on a secluded sandy beach with its own deep swimming hole, follow the water downstream into Middle Harbour and Bantry Bay where we see the numerous explosive magazines built by the early pioneers and learn their history.

AAT Kings Hawkesbury River Cruise (taking in Old Sydney Town and the Australian Reptile Park) Cruise the Hawkesbury on the Historic Mail Boat with plenty of time to take in the Australian Reptile Park and Old Sydney Town. Get up close with koalas, kangaroos, platypus, crocodiles and alligators, learn about snake and spider milking, see convict escapes, flogging, street theatre, re-enactment of the Australian pioneer days. Tour departs Sundays from Star City Coach Interchange Terminal.
